Treadmills activate a number of muscles and increase your heart rate to burn calories, and slimming your thighs demands that you burn more calories than you consume. Since muscle tissue needs calories to function, the more muscles you activate, the more calories you burn, and the treadmill activates your core, legs and even your arms if you are swinging them while you move.
The Efficiency of Treadmills
Treadmills work by increasing your heart rate and activating the same muscles you would use when walking or jogging outside. Your body burns calories to sustain the muscle activity needed while using the treadmill, and burning calories is your goal, but how effective the treadmill is will depend on how intense your workout is. For a person that weighs 160 pounds, walking on the treadmill burns about 9 calories per minute, jogging about 12 and running about 15.
Challenges for Treadmills
Though every minute you spend using the treadmill will be burning calories, giving yourself a challenge will ensure you burn the most amount of calories. Aside from increasing your speed, you can usually also increase your incline to add difficulty. Also try interval training, which incorporates periods of high intensity with periods of low intensity. To start, try jogging or running for 30 to 60 seconds, and walking or jogging for 60 to 120 seconds.
If you want the treadmill to help you slim your thighs, you have to be willing to eat healthy so that your diet does not destroy your weight-loss goals. Note: adding hip exercises into your workout routine is recommended, but it will not increase your chances of losing fat specifically in that region.
Start your treadmill activity with a warm up. Stretch your whole body, focusing on your legs and midsection after the warm up. You want to work as hard as you can while on the treadmill to slim your thighs, but you don't want to push yourself too far. Keep a water bottle with you, and if you feel lightheaded or dizzy, stop working out. When you're finished working out, cool down and stretch again.
